What is Starlink? Is Starlink really the future of the Internet?

Suppose you went to visit Bandarban, after a long day of fatigue, you can see with your mobile in hand that there is no network. If that were the case with a device you could watch Bandarban and gigabit speeds on Netflix at 4k resolution again? What would it be like then? Is it really possible?

Starlink is one such technology aimed at ensuring universal Internet service. Sterlink’s goal is to provide low cost internet service to places where internet service is not available or even if it is available, it is expensive. Although Starlink aims to provide Internet services in rural areas or places far from the city where access to Internet services is expensive, Starlink’s technology is going to change the entire Internet infrastructure.

And that will be possible because of the low-orbit satellite broadband connectivity.

How does Sterlink work?
The fiber optic cable we currently use transmits data using light signals. But in optical fiber, light has to pass through glass medium, so the speed of light is reduced by about 40%. Low-orbit satellites will use laser-lights to communicate with each other and exchange data. Since the light has to pass through the air instead of the glass, the speed of light does not decrease. Due to the fact that light can travel at full speed, the speed of data transfer is also high.

However, because low-orbit satellites are constantly moving at high speeds, they are arranged with a certain calculation so that they do not collide with each other. The Starlink project will use about 12,000 satellites.

Low-Orbit Satellite or Starlink and Geo-Stationary Satellite

We know geo-stationery as a satellite that orbits the earth at an altitude of about 36,000 kilometers above the earth’s surface. But what is a low-orbit satellite?

Low-orbit satellites are basically much closer to the Earth’s surface than geo-stationary satellites, and these satellites move steadily from place to place. This low-orbit satellite will be used for projects like Starlink or similar.

Why isn’t the geo-stationary satellite using Sterlink?
Even with geo-stationary satellites, many companies now offer Internet services, which are expensive and have limited Internet speeds. This type of satellite is much higher than the Earth’s surface, so it has a much higher latency / ping, which is about 400-500 ms or milliseconds.

However, it will be possible to transfer data at gigabit speeds via low-orbit satellite or Starlink, and its latency will be much lower. Starlink latency will initially be around 25 milliseconds, and later it will be reduced to 10 milliseconds or less.

What is latency?
Latency is basically a measure of how fast a computer can connect to another computer, or how fast it can respond to each other. Now the question is, why is this latency important?

Suppose you are playing Pubg with your friend in online multiplayer. Your internet speed is good enough, but latency is much higher. So whatever happens in this case, you may have shot your enemy as soon as you see him, but since the latency of your internet connection is high, it will take some time for your shooting instructions to reach the server. And in the middle of this time, maybe your enemy has moved away and is shooting at you! You were supposed to win, but you are the loser!
