Types of Sentences According to Purpose

There are basically five types of sentences depending on the purpose. They are:

  • Assertive Sentence
  • Interrogative sentence
  • imperative sentence
  • Optional Prayer
  • exclamatory sentence

All types of sentences depending on the purpose are discussed below.

Assertive Sentence

The sentence that can be defined with a single clause is called the assertive sentence. Assertive sentences are used to indicate a regular statement, a simple story, or the like.

For example:

  1. I’ll go to the office now.
  2. You may prefer a taxi.
  3. I’ll pick you up after my office.

Interrogative sentence
If something is asked with a sentence, it is called an interrogative sentence. When someone needs to know something then they ask a question. These questions are known as interrogative sentences.

For example:

  1. Are you busy now?
  2. Can I call you to talk about the exam?
  3. What topic are you reading right now?

Imperative sentence
Imperative sentences are those sentences that express some order, command or request. People often use imperative sentences when they are trying to do something for another person. It can be a request or an order.

For example:

  1. Go to the meeting.
  2. Clean the blackboard.
  3. Please bring me a glass of water.

Optional Sentence
Optional sentences are those sentences that say something about praying or wishing. When we want something from God we use the optative prayer. To wish for something better we also use the optional sentence.

For example:

  1. May Allah bless you.
  2. Be happy always in your life.
  3. Best wishes to both of you.

Exclamatory sentence
Exclamatory sentences are a type of sentence that expresses something amazed, happy or sad.

When someone wins a prize or loses a game we use exclamatory sentences. To express joy or sadness we normally use exclamatory sentences.

For example:

  1. Live! We won the match.
  2. Poor me! Albert Einstein no longer exists.
  3. I am very happy for you!

There are some other types of prayer, except types of prayers according to the purpose. Which will be discussed in the next article.
